Hi Everyone,

In just over 4 days, I will be boarding a plane to fly to Toronto, ON, to compete for the title of Miss Teenage Canada 2014 (www.missteenagecanada.com).  Words cannot even begin to describe how excited I am to be participating in the largest teen competition (http://www.missteenagecanada.com/about-mtcw/company-profile) to be held in all of Canada.

When I first spoke to my parents about my interest in competing in a nationwide pageant, my mother began to reminisce about how she used to watch pageants as a child with her mother and her sister.  She remembers watching Miss Teen Canada (www.missteenagecanada.com) back in the early 70’s right through to 1990, as it was always televised on CTV.  The original Miss Teen Canada (www.missteenagecanada.com) began back in 1969 and was promoted as a personality and beauty pageant. It was open to girls from the ages of 14-17.  For the first three years of this pageant’s life (1969-1971), it was known as the Miss Teenage Canada pageant (www.missteenagecanada.com) but in 1972, it was renamed to be called the Miss Teen Canada pageant (www.missteenagecanada.com)  Throughout the course of this pageants 22 year run, there were two years in which the winner was from my hometown, Edmonton, AB.  These winners were Emily Sertic, crowned in 1982 and Lori Assheton-Smith, crowned in 1983.  In 1988, Dara Sutton, from Calgary, AB, was crowned making it a total of 3 Alberta winners in a 22 year span!

When I first came across the post for the Miss Teenage Canada Pageant (www.missteenagecanada.com), formerly known as Miss Teen Canada – World (www.missteenagecanada.com) on the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/MissTeenageCanada), I was immediately interested.  This pushed me to do some research on this particular pageant, as I was confused by the many other teen pageants out there.  What I found completely impressed me and made me certain that I definitely wanted to be a part of the Miss Teenage Canada pageant (www.missteenagecanada.com) that is owned by MTC-W Inc. and produced by the beautiful and talented Michelle Weswaldi (http://www.missteenagecanada.com/about-mtcw/meet-the-team)  Upon realizing this, I immediately sent my application in to MTC-W Inc. (http://www.missteenagecanada.com/become-mtcw/apply-now) and within a very short time, I was contacted to arrange for my initial Skype interview which was the first big step on this incredible journey.

Unlike many of the other teen pageants that are offered, the Miss Teenage Canada pageant (www.missteenagecanada.com) is the only teen pageant that first holds Provincial pageants as the initial qualifying round to move delegates on to the National pageant held in Toronto, ON (which, by the way, is where all the CTV televised pageants from 1969-1990 were also held).

My Skype interview was held by Michelle Weswaldi herself.  Although I was very nervous, but excited, for this interview, Michelle’s kind and welcoming demeanor immediately put me at ease.  She truly is one of the most amazing ladies (and now mentors) that I have met.  Just days prior to my interview, Michelle had a baby!!  This did not stop her, or even slow her down, from continuing to produce the Miss Teenage Canada pageant (www.missteenagecanada.com).  Thankfully, I successfully made it through the interview process and moved on to compete in the Miss Teenage Alberta 2014 Provincial pageant (www.missteenagecanada.com) held in Calgary, AB on February 8th and 9th, 2014.  It was at this pageant that I was able to personally meet Michelle Weswaldi (such a pleasure) and also was crowned Miss Teenage Edmonton 2014 (www.missteenagecanada.com). It was truly the most wonderful experience!!

All this recap, now brings me to the current day. From July 19th to July 26th, 61 beautiful delegates from all over Canada will be travelling to Toronto, ON to compete in the Miss Teenage Canada 2014 (www.missteenagecanada.com) pageant with hopes of being crowned the winner.  As a personal strong believer in promoting inner beauty, I am so incredibly proud to be one of the delegates fortunate enough to be representing Alberta this summer.  Not only is the Miss Teenage Canada (www.missteenagecanada.com) pageant about grace and beauty, it is also about being a positive ambassador and humanitarian within our society.  In promoting this, MTC-W Inc. encourages delegates to fundraise for different charities.  MTC-W Inc. supports different charities for their pageants and I am very proud to say that I was able to be involved with fundraising for both Cardiac Kids during the Miss Teenage Canada (www.missteenagecanada.com) provincial pageant, and now am currently involved in fundraising for the Free the Children charity as a delegate in the Miss Teenage Canada (www.missteenagecanada.com) National Pageant.

In addition to helping these charities out through fundraising efforts, MTC-W Inc. and Michelle Weswaldi even take it a step futher.  Not only does the winner of Miss Teenage Canada (www.missteenagecanada.com) get to represent Canada at the Miss Teen Universe pageant, but they also get to work closely with the Free the Children charity by participating in a MeToWe Trip to a Free The Children location to help these children out firsthand.  What an amazing experience that would be!!

The countdown has officially started…July 19th will mark the first day in a whole new amazing journey for 61 excited teens.  Each of these 61 delegates will give their very best to positively represent their provinces and regions and promote their titles.  Although it is a competition, I cannot wait to meet all these beautiful people and begin to form life long friendships and to continue to nurture the friendships that already began at the provincial pageant in Calgary.

I’m also very excited to meet the celebrity hosts of this years pageant…Luke Bilyk (from Degrassi) and Cynthia Loewen (Miss Teenage South-Western Ontario 2010, Miss Earth Ontario 2012, 1st Runner Up Miss Earth Ontario 2012, 2nd Runner Up Miss Face Of Beauty International 2012 {held in Thailand})!!

Throughout the 6 year history of the Miss Teenage Canada pageant, (www.missteenagecanada.com), there has not yet been a winner from Alberta (#hometown).  It is my hope that I may be the first Miss Teenage Canada winner (www.missteenagecanada.com) to be crowned from my Province.  If I am fortunate enough to be crowned with this honour, I will represent this title proudly.  As a pageant winner, I believe that it is not only our privilege, but also our obligation to positively represent all teens around the world.  In receiving a title of this magnitude, we have a responsibility not only to MTC-W Inc., Michelle Weswaldi but also to ourselves and youth from every community to do good as a titleholder, to use the public platform that we have been presented with to raise awareness to issues and events that exist within our world, as every one of us, through even the smallest of gestures, can make a positive difference.

I would like to wish all my fellow delegates the best of luck at nationals.  I cannot wait to meet you all and share this experience with each and every one of you!!

For those of you unable to attend the pageant in person, don’t forget to tune in live, on July 26th at 8 pm EST (http://www.livestream.com/missteenage) to see who will be crowned Miss Teenage Canada 2014 (www.missteenagecanada.com)

À la prochaine fois,

xo Brianne.
